Can you explain the 10% over/under-run?
The 10% variance in manufacturing is an industry-wide standard. Beginning with your printed-paper parts, we overrun your order by around 10%. This allows us to inspect the print for any inconsistencies and discard anything that isn't up to quality control standards. This same process is carried out on the replicated CDs or DVDs as well. Finally, after everything is assembled, it passes through quality control again, rejecting units with assembly inconsistencies. As a result of this, the quantity of units shipped is often slightly over the quantity ordered. This system and policy is used widely throughout the CD and DVD manufacturing industry.

I'd like to request less than a 10% over/under-run. Can I do that?
Sure. We've been able to tweak our system to run CDs within 2.5% to 5% variance. However, the printed parts are generally run on press with multiple jobs. As a result, print is usually run at 10% overrun. If you'd like to request a smaller CD overrun, we can certainly accommodate you, however, printed parts will be billed at a 10% variance. The resulting extra printed copies are usually destroyed.

I have a small correction I'd like to make to my artwork. Can you guys take care of that?

I am looking to re-order a job that was originally pressed somewhere else. Can you use a replicated piece from the original pressing as the master?
We sure can. Replicated pieces from previous runs are fine for production masters. The information is digital, so there will be no quality loss. What's more, we do the disc face film for free on standard represses coming from other vendors.

What type of paper stocks do you work with at ICON?
Our standard stock is what you'd find on most major label releases. It's a 100lb gloss coated stock.
When requested, we have the ability to then apply a matte finish to our standard stock. This dulls the gloss and leaves the side with matte finish smooth with a low luster. This process provides a subtle, but elegant alternative to the standard stock.
We also stock an 80lb uncoated text stock. This stock is completely free of coating, and has a rough texture. Often when people are looking for "matte stock" they are actually looking for uncoated stock. Uncoated stock provides a stark and attractive alternative to the standard stock. Since less people run jobs on uncoated stock, they are generally more expensive due to the increased setup costs.
At ICON we can also run on specialty and custom stocks like translucent vellum, colored paper, etc. These kinds of papers are not kept in inventory, but can be custom ordered.

Do you have the ability to encode the band, album, and track information so it recognizable when a listener puts the CD in a computer?
There are generally two ways this is achieved. First is CD-TEXT, which encodes the information on to the CD. This option will allow the information to be displayed on some car and home stereo systems. This will not display on iTunes or Windows Media Player. ICON has the ability to encode CD-TEXT. If you'd like CD-TEXT just let us know when placing your order.
Computer music players like iTunes and Windows Media Player retrieve information about the band, album title, and track name from the internet. Most commonly these programs refer to the online CDDB database. If you'd like to register your information with CDDB, you can do so at www.CDDB.com, or submit information directly from the iTunes program. If you have any questions about CDDB, ICON will try to answer your questions as best we can!
